Alan Mitchell Schroeder The third of seven sons, Alan Mitchell Schroeder was born Dec. 19, 1949, to Earl and Jnell Schroeder in Montrose, Colo. As the child of an U.S. Army service member, Alan moved a total of eight times but always considered Colorado home. At ten he was diagnosed with aplastic anemia. Due to this, he was not allowed to partake in the "rough and tumble" games of childhood. Instead, he turned to learning and developed a passion for nature, history, Native American cultures and more. He graduated from Colorado State University in 1972 with a degree in Forestry and soon after began his 50-year career with the federal government working for the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation. He met his wife, Phyllis, in 1979, and they settled down in Meeker, CO. In 1992, they relocated to Grand Junction where he worked for the B.O.R. for more than 30 years. He loved western history, and one of his passions was re-enacting the fur-trade era with the Grand Mesa Muzzleloaders. Rightfully given the Mountain Man name, "The Professor", he loved sharing his knowledge of the trappers and traders through live presentations of the various skills and tools required of the era. A lover of the outdoors, Alan enjoyed fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing and bird watching. Alan passed away at his home on Nov. 2, 2024, and was undoubtedly met with open arms in heaven. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Phyllis; daughter Holly Daugherty (Schuyler); grandsons Jameson and Camdyn; brothers Gary, Dave, Mike (Kris), Rob (Beth), Randy (Marie) and Jim (Kae); dozens of cousins and many nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, at Palisade Christian Church, 3702 G Rd., Palisade, Colo.
